As the San Antonio NAACP Youth Council celebrates its 5th Annual Youth Image Awards Banquet we are proud to honor Mrs. Claudette Lewis, Educator, Youth Advocate and Visionary Founder and Organizer of the NAACP Youth Image Awards Program. The NAACP Youth Image Awards is a vision of the late Cherice Cochrane and her mother. As a mentor at S.H. Gates Elementary School, Cherice Founded the Annual School-Wide Spelling Bee Competition and provided incentives and recognition for good conduct, attendance and academic excellence. The program was a huge success and was expanded to include students from other local schools and recognition for its chapter members. Mrs. Lewis became Advisor of the local NAACP chapter in 1998 and held the position for 5 years until her illness in 2003. She is a life member of the San Antonio Branch and Chair of the “Back to School/Stay In School Program. Mrs. Lewis is a recipient of many awards for her service to the community, and for her dedication and commitment as an Educator. Among them are the; National NAACP Outstanding Youth Advisor, the JC Penney “Golden Rule”, United Way Outstanding Volunteer, Delta Sigma Theta, “Outstanding First Year Teacher,” “Outstanding Girl Scout Leader, the Express News, “Jefferson Award, “Outstanding Black Texan” and the NAACP Youth Advocacy Award. Her most significant accomplishment is, Founder/CEO of the Cherice Cochrane Mentoring For Success Foundation. Since its inception, four $500 scholarships have been awarded to deserving seniors. The NAACP Youth Council has also been the winners for four consecutive years for United Way, Mayor’s Youth Award in the group and
individual category. Mrs. Lewis is the mother of the late Cherice Cochrane and Mrs. Camille Reid a Seventh Grade English teacher in Richardson ISD.
